Our History
In the fall of 1967, a group of interested citizens of Newnan and Coweta County met at the YMCA building to discuss an arts and crafts festival for Newnan and Coweta County for the fall of 1968. This meeting was spearheaded by Lindsey Barron and Tom Powers. Tom asked for suggestions from the group. Ideas for a name, place, time, etc., were discussed.
Then a steering committee headed by Lindsey Barron and Tom Powers met to form basic plans for an active Art Association for Newnan and Coweta County. A list of officers was submitted as follows:

The first official meeting was January 1968. A charter was formed, and the Newnan-Coweta Art Association was incorporated June 18, 1968. There were 58 memberships (43 individual and 15 family).
In the fall of 1968, the Art Association members showed their art for the first time as a group at the Coweta County Fair exhibit buildings. It was most successful and was held annually for four years.
Then Powers Crossroads Country Fair & Art Festival was formed by Tom Powers. The Art Association became actively involved from the beginning in assisting Tom Powers with this huge Festival.
After the 1972 Art Association Spring Show, it was decided to cancel further spring shows since the area would be over-saturated. But the Association (in partnership with the YMCA) would continue to co-sponsor the Christmas Show at the Recreation Center.
Tom Powers successfully produced the Powers Crossroads Country Fair & Art Festival for 3-1/2 years. After the Chamber of Commerce finished out the year, they approached several groups to continue with the Festival. The Art Association became an integral part of Coweta Festivals, Inc., which was formed in 1975 in producing this highly successful event.
As a result of NCAA’s involvement in Powers Crossroads Festival, the Art Association was fortunate in sharing in the profits of this annual show, which enabled the Art Association to pursue many worthwhile projects, such as giving art scholarships to graduating seniors and donations to the schools to help subsidize their art programs. Donations were given to Newnan Public Library for the purchase of art books, videos, and other art-related projects.
Many art works have been sponsored by the NCAA over the years, and interesting programs are still being presented at the monthly meetings held at the Art House in the Recreation Department Complex. Members of the NCAA were instrumental in the upkeep of it's original "house" in many ways, such as furnishing appliances for the comfort of the students taking art classes through the Recreation Department.
In 1981, the NCAA achieved a non-profit status.
Since its founding in 1968, the NCAA has been actively engaged as an organization. For many years, the NCAA sponsored a Spring Art Show on the Court Square in Downtown Newnan. The annual Christmas Arts & Crafts Market -- a beloved NCAA tradition -- is still going strong these many decades later... as is our goal to bring an Art Education and an appreciation of the Arts to the residents of Newnan and Coweta County through our many projects.
