I am a proud third generation potter. My Grandmother, Dorothy Kindell, was a prolific potter in the 40’s and 50’s, known for her tiki culture ceramics that are still sought after today. Dorothy passed on her craft to my mother, June Kindell Applegate who taught me to throw pottery in 1975.
I was born in Flagstaff, Arizona but moved to Guam when I was 11. My parents taught school there, and I lived on Guam for 17 years. My family traveled extensively exposing me to many different cultures and art forms. When I left Guam, I had been teaching for two years and moved to Germany to teach school for the US Army. When I moved to Georgia, I continued teaching to complete 30 years in public schools. Toward the end of my teaching career, I started dabbling in pottery. Once I fully retired, I slowly worked up to being a full-time potter. Functional pottery is my specialty. I love creating simple, elegant pieces for use in the kitchen or on the table. In addition to being able to purchase my work online at PotteryByKent.com, it is also available at the Senoia Farmers Market on Saturdays. The logo I use to sign my pottery is a paw print in an apple. The apple is from Applegate and the paw is from Ludwig (Ludi for short) - the pottery cat who used to jump on my lap while I was throwing pots. I love being able to combine what I have enjoyed in my art and my travels into my pottery. I will always continue to experiment and appreciate the philosophy of art. |
