Artist’s Statement

Paul Conlan is a fine art photographer whose work ranges from “street photography” and the urban landscape to the small towns and back roads of the rural South. His passion is to record unique scenes from urban and rural life as they naturally unfold. His thought-provoking color photographs often reveal the compelling interplay between people, places and objects that occurs at decisive moments. Many are taken reflexively, while more time is available to capture others. Few are ever posed. The carefully chosen names of his photographs offer additional insights into his vision.

Paul's work has been exhibited throughout the South, selected by jurors such as Julian Cox (curator of photography at the High Museum, Atlanta, GA), Jane Jackson (curator for Sir Elton John), Jamie Allen (assistant curator, George Eastman House, Rochester, NY), Amy Miller (executive director, Atlanta Celebrates Photography), John Bennette (curator, collector and consultant, New York City, NY), gallery owners Anna Skillman, Faye Gold, Naomi Sylva and Benjamin Krause, and photographers Tim Barnwell, Birney Imes and Sylvia Plachey. Paul is an active member of the Roswell Photographic Society where he was named Photographer of the Year (Overall) for 2006 and 2007 and Photographer of the Year (Digital Projected Images) for 2005, 2007 - 2009. He is also a member of the New Orleans Photo Alliance and the Atlanta Photography Group where his work is often included in shows at the Tula Arts Center including his solo Urban Landscapes exhibit as the InFocus Featured Photographer (June 2008). Biography

Paul was born in Miami, Florida and grew up exploring its city streets, the shipyards along the Miami River, and the shores of Biscayne Bay. His love of photography originated with his father whom he once “accused” of photographing every egret and blue heron in South Florida… at least twice. After graduating from Georgia Tech with a degree in Aerospace Engineering, Paul studied art with Faye Gold and photography at the Atlanta College of Art. For years he worked with black and white photography, processing film and printing in his own dark room. In 1996 he moved from film to digital photography, which he does exclusively today.

Paul and his wife Susan live in Newnan, Georgia, where Susan teaches high school French. They have three grown children: Martha Williams, w ho is a graduate of the University of West Georgia and a practicing Registered Nurse; David, who is a 2009 graduate of The Citadel and a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps; and Daniel who is a senior at the University of Georgia.
