Rae Duncan is an artist who works primarily in the medium of paper. Early in her career, she exhibited her illustrative artwork in gallery art shows throughout Southern California. Today she specializes solely in handmade designs fashioned from paper (archival, recycled, specialty, cardboard, etc.).
“I truly enjoy the artistic experience of creating something beautiful from nothing more than a few pieces of paper and my imagination,” she said. “Nature usually directs my path and I constantly draw upon it for inspiration. My art is a culmination of my efforts to show the fluidity of paper, revealing the many possibilities of this material and bring forth the beauty that lies within.”
Rae sells her original paper art paintings (shown above), primarily through the annual Newnan-Coweta Juried Art Show, a few local galleries, via personal referrals and direct contact. These paintings are made with hand-cut archival paper, individually placed and mounted onto canvas then sealed with gel medium and/or resin.
She earned her Bachelor and Master’s Degrees in the study of Fine Arts from California State University, Los Angeles. Professionally, she has over 35 years of art experience in the corporate arena and has held positions such as Illustrator, Graphic Designer, Apparel Designer, Art Director, Creative Director, Director of Marketing & Advertising, and Director of Product Development. This career provided her the wonderful opportunity to work and travel to mainland China and numerous other countries worldwide. She is truly grateful for the opportunity as it afforded her a chance to learn from the many artisans she met during her career.
Rae is also drawn to paper crafting where she creates and sells exquisite hand-cut floral creations from crepe paper and/or bond paper. She also sells home décor wreaths made from, What else? Recycled books! Each book-page wreath has its own beauty and uniqueness, resulting from how the pages were cut, dyed and deconstructed, then reconstructed. The result unites two of her greatest passions (Art and Books) turning them into stunning works of sustainable art. She purposefully focuses on a medium that would otherwise be discarded. Her unique style combines a bit of whimsy with familiar forms, usual found in nature. If any of these design distinctive catches your eye, please do not hesitate to contact Rae directly.
Another part of Rae’s endeavors is teaching paper art workshops. Rae has taught these highly educational and entertaining workshops for the past eight (8) years. Originally, these workshops were created exclusively for libraries. As such, they’re extremely successful in enhancing each library adult education programs, driving up attendance and fostering goodwill within the community. Upon request, Rae’s paper arts workshops can be tailored to accommodate the private sector (schools, senior center, sororities, church groups, family reunions, birthday parties, etc.). It is widely accepted that participation in the Arts, no matter what type, is an enriching activity beneficial to all those who participate!
